AKA 'Split Rock', these unusual plants are part of the group of succulents known as mesembs. As each pair of leaves emerge, the previous pair of leaves dies off- with the new leaves essentially absorbing the old ones- and their nutrients and stored water. The 'Royal Flush' cultivar has striking purple leaves and bright pink blooms, while the classic species has silvery green leaves and warm yellowish orange blooms.
2" or 4" pot
LIGHT: Direct sun indoors- ideally on a windowsill in a south or west facing window. If kept outdoors, partial shade to full sun.
WATER: Place in a pot with ample drainage. Water when leaves begin to look slightly shriveled/puckered- soil is typically completely dry at that point. Unlike other mesembs like Lithops, Pleiospilos do need at least a little water in the winter in order for the plant to bloom. If kept outdoors, protect this plant from cold and excessive rain (bring inside or cover). Always empty saucer of any excess water that has drained out.
SOIL: For best results with Pleiospilos, mimic their native South African soil by ensuring good drainage and high mineral content. Our Desert Potting Mix, with some extra pumice mixed in is ideal. Other cacti/succulent potting mixes, with extra pumice added at a 1:1 ratio will also work.
NOTES: Pleiospilos develop pretty, daisy-like blooms- usually in the late winter or early spring. These blooms only open in the afternoon, closing by sunset.
