Plant Know-How: Philodendron melanochrysum

Philodendron melanochrysum, with greenish-redish-goldish colored enlongated heart shaped leaves. In a terracotta pot, against a white brick wall.

Sometimes called Philodendron "Black Gold", Philodendron melanochrysum is a unique Aroid with stunning velvety leaves, that range from deep green, to reddish pink, to gold, and almost appear to be glowing from inside! Though the leaves may resemble 'Micans' in color, as the plant matures, the leaf shape is distinctly different and the leaf size is much larger than a mature 'Micans'. Endemic to the Andes foothills in Columbia, Philodendron melanochrysum grows up the trunks of trees in the wild. Like many Philodendrons, P. melanochrysum's leaves change shape as they mature, so you can look forward to watching your plant grow and change! To encourage your plant to produce mature leaves it is best to grow your Philodendron melanochrysum on a moss pole, or give it some kind of support to help it grow upwards! If you've grown Philodendrons before you'll find caring for Philodendron melanochrysum a breeze.
