Plant Know-How: Philodendron billietiae

Lately we feel like we're living in the golden era of houseplant production- the number of rad plants we used to only be able to dream of acquiring for the shop (let alone at reasonable prices) that are now available to us is blowing us away! Philodendron billietiae is one such plant- once very hard to find without spending a huge amount of money, we just got a batch in the shop for a very reasonable price! This gorgeous Philodendron has elongated deep green leaves that have a fine edging of red, and reddish orange petioles that become more pronounced in color as more mature leaves come in. A self-heading Philodendron, P. billietiae doesn't necessarily need support, but as the plant grows larger, you may find it does best with a stake, trellis or moss pole- unless you have room for it to spread out or scramble.
Caring for Philodendron billietiae is similar to the care for many Philodendrons- read on for our full care guide!

HOW TO CARE FOR PHILODENDRON BILLIETIAE:

Light Requirements for Philodendron billietiae: this plant does best in bright indirect (filtered) light indoors, in order to maintain large leaves and good fullness. It can even take an hour or two of direct sun- as long as it's in the morning. It may tolerate medium light, but leaves will be smaller and the plant will have less of them overall. Outdoors, keep  P. billietiae in full-shade, to partial morning sun. Avoid intense direct sun with this plant, especially outdoors.

Watering Tips for Philodendron billietiae: As always, use a pot with a drainage hole, or remove the grower pot from the cachepot when watering. Allow the top 1/3 of the soil to go dry before watering. If you need some help knowing when to water your plant a moisture meter is a helpful tool that can take out some of the guesswork!

The Best Soil for Philodendron billietiae: Your plant will grow best in a chunky, well draining soil mix. Our Folia Favorite Potting Mix is a great choice!

Is Philodendron billietiae Pet Safe? Philodendron billietiae is not pet safe and can be toxic when consumed by pets. If you're looking for pet-safe plants, be sure to check out the Pet Safe category of the Plant Care Compendium

How to style Philodendron billietiae: We love P. billietiae in a terracotta colored pot that will bring out the reddish-orange color on the edges of the leaves and the petioles. Keep in mind that as a self-heading Philodendron, this plant will grow as an upright plant and won't need something to climb, but may need a stake for support as the plant gets larger.

Did you know? Self heading Philodendrons like P. billietiae tend to look best when either given light from above, or with a 1/4 turn once a week, to keep their growth even. Otherwise you may notice the plant leaning toward the strongest light source, and all of the leaves turning to face the light.
