Plant Know-How: Maranta leuconeura 'Marisela'

You may be more used to seeing this plant dressed up in red, but we think this green is just as striking! This is Maranta leuconeura 'Marisela', the all green counterpart to the more commonly seen red backed Maranta leuconeura. Maranta leuconeura 'Marisela' is commonly referred to as the Prayer Plant for it's unique movement of its leaves. During the day the leaves lay flat, but in the evening the plant raises its leaves in a motion reminiscent of praying. Maranta leuconeura 'Marisela' is native to Brazil where it grows in dark, humid tropical rainforests. This is a plant that requires added humidity when kept in a home environment. Don't let that scare you off from this plant though! Maranta leuconeura 'Marisela' is one of the easier to keep Calathea relatives, and a great choice if you love vibrant Calatheas but don't have the time or patience for them. CARE TIPS:

Light: Keep your Maranta leuconeura 'Marisela' in medium to bright indirect light. Be sure to protect your plant from any direct sun as the leaves will burn.

Water: Your Maranta leuconeura 'Marisela' never wants to go fully dry. Water your plant when about half of the soil has gone dry. If your leaves are curling that's usually an indication your plant is thirsty. Give it a good soak and it should perk right up! Be sure every time you water you're evenly watering and fully saturating the soil. Maranta leuconeura 'Marisela' also requires added humidity to grow its best. You can provide this by keeping your plant next to a humidifier, keeping it in a well lit bathroom, or placing it on top of a pebble tray.

Did you know? Maranta leuconeura 'Marisela' grow from rhizomes, a root structure similar to bulbs or corms. If your Maranta leuconeura 'Marisela' ever dies back completely, don't lose all hope! Keep your plant somewhere well lit and the soil moist the the rhizomes of your plant may begin to shoot out new growth!
