Plant Know-How: Scindapsus pictus 'Exotica'

Scindapsus picture exotica wide
Scindapsu pictus 'Exotica' is well loved by both beginner and seasoned plant lovers alike. You might sometimes see the plant sold as a "Satin Pothos" even though it isn't an Epipremnum (that latin name for Pothos) at all. While Scindapsus pictus 'Exotica' may not be an Epipremnum it does share a lot of similarities with the genus. Both are aroids, both grow in similar humid jungle environments, and both are generally very easy to grow. Scindapsus has the added benefit of being a plant that will tell you when it's thirsty. You'll notice when your Scindapsus pictus 'Exotica' is thirsty that its leaves will begin to curl inwards. This behavior is great for beginners who might not yet be attuned to when their plants need to be watered. This along with being generally hardy make it a great first plant. Wether you're just starting out or just want to strengthen your plant knowledge we've got all of the info you'll need here for keeping a happy Scindapsus!

CARE TIPS:

Light: Scindapsus pictus 'Exotica' does best in medium to bright indirect light. If kept in a lower light situation your plant will need to be watered less frequently.

Water: Water your Scindapsus pictus 'Exotica' when the top 1-2" of the soil has gone dry. Like we said before this is a very communicative plant and will tell you when it's thirsty! Keep an eye out for leaves that are starting to curl inwards.

Did you know? In the wild, like many other Aroids, Scindapsus picture 'Exotica' is a climbing plant! While it does climb like some of its relatives, Scindasus pictus 'Exotica' has a unique way of doing it. Scindapsus is a shingling species, meaning as it grows upwards the leaves will grow flat against whatever surface they are climbing. The growth habit resembles the shingles of a roof, hence the name!

Ready to graduate from Pothos and bring home one of these silvery plants? We have Scindapsus pictus 'Exotica' available in-store!
