Plant Know-How: Spathipyllum 'Sensation'

Spathiphyllum 'Sensation' close
Spathiphyllum, or Peace Lilies, are one of the most commonly kept houseplants. No doubt you've seen them in offices, restaurants, and probably even your parent's house. Spathiphyllum 'Sensation' isn't quite your mother's Peace Lily though. 'Sensation' is the largest cultivar of Spathiphyllum and produces large, deeply ribbed leaves. This large Spathiphyllum makes for a perfect statement plant in any home and produces the same white inflorescence as its smaller relatives. While Spathiphyllum may have a reputation for being boring or pedestrian we think Spathiphyllum 'Sensation' certainly challenges those stereotypes.

CARE TIPS:

Light: Spathipyllum are often touted as plants that do well in low light. While they can handle lower light your Spathipyllum 'Sensation' will do best in medium, to bright indirect light, especially if you want it to flower.

Water: Water your Spathiphyllum 'Sensation' when the top 2-3" is dry. Spathiphyllum is well known to wilt dramatically when it's gone a little too dry. If your plant seems perky one day and on death's doorstep the next, check the soil. Often all it needs is a thorough watering to bring it back to life!

Did you know? Spathiphyllum were one of the plant genera studied in a 1989 NASA study on the ability of plants to filter and clean air in space stations. While Spathiphyllum were found to filter out all of the pollutants being studied, more recent studies are finding that plants aren't as efficient at filtering indoor air as previously thought. So don't throw out your air purifier just yet!
