Plant Know-How: Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum

Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum is one of our absolute favorite plants. You may be more familiar with this plant as Philodendron  bipinnatifidum. This plant was part of the Philodendron genus until 2018 when it was reclassified into the new genus of  Thaumatophyllum. No matter its name this plant remains close to our hearts! As Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum matures its growth habit changes from the bushy type of growth you often see in stores, to an almost tree like habit with a distinct trunk. While they may start off small these plants can grow to very large sizes. Specimens in the wild have been known to grow to upwards of fifteen feet! Don't worry, it's unlikely your Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum will grow to these gargantuan sizes in your home and take over. However, given the proper care these plants can grow to a large size and will be a beautiful statement plant that you'll enjoy for years and years!

CARE TIPS:

Light: Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum does best in medium to bright indirect light. Like most other aroids make sure to shield your Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum from direct light as the leaves will burn. 

Water: Allow soil to dry about halfway down before watering again. When watering make sure to fully saturate the soil until water flows from the drainage holes.

Did you know? As Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum grows it drops leaves, developing it's unique trunk. The scars left behind from the dropped leaves are what form the unique eye like markings on the trunk!
